I just finished “one of those days”. You know, the days where nothing goes wrong exactly, but nothing really goes right either. I don’t like those kinds of days at all. I’m in my room, I haven’t really done anything with my life tonight, but I just feel drained. Like old dishwater that has been sitting in the sink too long. Or an empty fish bowl. Or like the fish inside the empty fish bowl. Or like the Igloo cooler that’s been used for too long and is begging to be put back into storage. Or a bathtub. You know? Drained.
But then I began to read in Galatians 5, because it’s required reading for my accounting class. Here’s what I read first:
Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
How’s that for a list of sin? I must admit, those were pretty dismal verses after a rough day. Am I not guilty of all of them? For if anyone offend in one point (or more than one), he is guilty of all. Sin is weighty.
But then I got to this:
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
And I remembered that I’m saved by the grace of God and the weight of all my sin isn’t mine anymore. I have the Holy Spirit inside of me, cultivating these fruits within me. Love, joy, peace! Longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and temperance. It kind of gave me a new perspective. This list was a breath of fresh air on a bad day. I just love that the Lord is the perfect example of all those things! I also like lists. But that’s a different story.
So, my day did not magically get better. But it’s ok. The Lord is helping me become like the 2nd list. I like that.
